Math 1 and 2 |
|
Math 1 and 2 are an interactive, multimedia math series. The course emphasizes problem solving in real life situations that require mathematical concepts and communication.
The course is open ended and user-centered. It is based on NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) goals.
The Goal
The
series takes a problem solving approach to teaching math.
The goal of the series is to provide strategies for approaching and
solving math problems that individuals are likely to encounter in their daily
lives. The skills taught are
applicable on the job, in the home and in the community.
Math 1 and 2 are aimed at individuals who need to master the fundamental math concepts encountered everyday. These are the concepts often presented during the first eight years of school. The instruction assumes a reading level of approximate fourth grade or higher and begins with problem solving strategies and whole number computation. The lessons spiral progressively through fractions, decimals, measurement, geometry, data analysis and probability. The course integrates the use of estimation and calculator skills throughout the instruction.
Math
1 and 2 utilize the Learning 2000 multimedia, interactive teaching platform and
incorporates a KET-produced series, Math Basics, as a base.
Some video segments feature nationally recognized teachers of mathematics
using props to help learners visualize key mathematical concepts.
Other segments show mathematics at work through brief interviews with
people in their real-world settings.
18 multimedia “books” composed of three
chapters each
1,500 screens of instruction that blend
information in text, graphics, and segments of instructional video
4.5 hours of award-winning instructional video
1,250 test questions and interactive exercise
questions with feedback
On-line tools: a calculator, an English
dictionary with Spanish translations, a thesaurus, and instructional text
narration
Automatic record keeping of time on task as well
as test and exercise scores
Ability for users to learn at their own pace.
